7th Grade Social Studies
Course Overview:
In the 7th grade students will study the social, cultural, and technological advances that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia from 500-1789 A.D. In particular, students will study the history and geography of great civilizations that were developing concurrently throughout the world during the medieval and early modern times. Students will examine the growing economic interaction among the civilizations as well as the exchange of their ideas, beliefs, technologies, and commodities.
Learning Objectives:
Throughout the year, students will be challenged to continue to expand their study and thinking skills. This course will place emphasis on chronological and spatial thinking, gathering and the interpretation of research, evidence, and of key events.

- 3-Ring binder for class handouts, syllabus, maps, etc…
- Folder designated specifically for social studies
Course Requirements:
In order to be successful in this course, students will be required to come to class prepared and ready to participate. Students will be required to take Cornell Notes during class and may be assigned to take notes for homework. There will be geography quizzes, chapter exams, and research papers. Exams will contain essays questions, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple choice questions. The class will receive study guides before exams.
Homework Policies:
Homework is required for students to practice and gain mastery in specific skills. It is an important aspect of social studies and it is worth a substantial percentage in determining the overall grade. It is important to complete homework on time; if it is turned in late points will be deducted. Once a chapter is completed, any homework which has not been turned in for that particular chapter will no longer be accepted.
If a student is absent, they have the designated time to make up the assigned classwork and homework as outlined by the 2009- 2010 Parent-Student Handbook. Typically, it is one day to make up the assigned work for each day the student was absent.
I understand that there are situations beyond the control of both students and parents which occasionally impede any efforts to complete the assigned homework. A student will not be penalized for not having their homework completed if a note is written by a parent. Verbal explanations by students will not be accepted, and an Incomplete Homework Assignment Slip will be issued.
Course Evaluation:
Students will be graded on the following categories: tests, quizzes, projects, homework, classwork, and participation in class. Grades are weighted and are as follows: tests: 25% projects: 25% quizzes: 15% Classwork: 15% Homework: 10% Class Participation: 10%
