6th Religion Syllabus

Course Overview:

The 6th religion curriculum focuses on the understanding of our Catholic Church by examining Scripture, Sacraments, morality and social justice. Students will continue to develop their faith by learning and participating in school masses and special liturgies.  In addition, the religion curriculum also integrates drug awareness through Red Ribbon Week, Internet safety through I-Safe and Family Life.

Learning Objectives:

Students will be challenged to continue to develop their faith and understanding of the Catholic Church. This course will place emphasis on the vocabulary, prayers, and religious practices of the Church.

Course Materials:

You must bring all of the items below to class everyday.

1.     Textbook

2.    Folder designated specifically for religion

3.    Wire-bound notebook used solely for a journal.

4.    Catholic School Student Assignment Book

Course Requirements:

In order to be successful in this course, students will be required to come to class prepared with all materials. Participation is also required by everyone. There will be vocabulary quizzes, chapter tests, journal reflections, and essays. Exams will contain multiple choice questions, true/false questions and essays. The class will receive study guides before exams.

Service Hours:

All 6th students are required to complete 18 hours of Christian Service to the community per academic year, 6 hours per trimester. Students may earn up to 3 hours of service for altar serving or choir. The purpose of Christian service hours is for students to help their community outside of family and friends. Required forms are available throughout the year.

In addition, at the conclusion of each semester, students will be required to reflect on their experience through a personal narrative. Assignment information will be distributed through out the school year.

Course Evaluation:

Students will be graded on the following categories: tests, quizzes, homework and participation in class. Final grades will be calculated by each category have a specific weight: tests and projects are worth 25%, quizzes 10%, classwork 10%, homework and class participation are worth 15%

Homework Policies:

Homework is required for students to practice and gain mastery in specific skills. It is an important aspect of social studies and it is worth a substantial percentage in determining the overall grade. It is important to complete homework on time; if it is turned in late points will be deducted. Once a chapter is completed, any homework which has not been turned in for that particular chapter will no longer be accepted.

If a student is absent, they have the designated time to make up the assigned classwork and homework as outlined by the 2009-2010 Parent-Student Handbook. Typically, it is one day to make up the assigned work for each day the student was absent.

I understand that there are situations beyond the control of both students and parents which occasionally impede any efforts to complete the assigned homework. A student will not be penalized for not having their homework completed if a note is written by a parent. Verbal explanations by students will not be accepted, and an Incomplete Homework Assignment Slip will be issued.
